What $300,000 Buys You in New Boston vs. Texarkana, Texas

If you have a home-buying budget around $300,000 in Bowie County, Texas, you have options. But the type of home, property, and location your money buys can look very different depending on whether you focus your search in New Boston or Texarkana.

Both markets offer homes well below the price points buyers see in many larger Texas cities. In August 2026, Realtor.com reports a median listing price of about $219,000 in New Boston and approximately $230,000 in Texarkana. That means a $300,000 budget puts a buyer above the current median asking price in either market.

So, which one gives you more for your money?

The answer depends on what "more" means to you.

What $300,000 Looks Like in New Boston, Texas

New Boston is a smaller East Texas community approximately 20 miles west of Texarkana. When buyers start shopping in the upper $200,000s to around $300,000 here, they can often find a combination of square footage, larger lots, updated homes, and properties outside the traditional subdivision setting.

Current listings illustrate the range. As of August 2026, homes around this price point include a 3-bedroom, 2-bath home with approximately 2,056 square feet listed at $300,000, a 4-bedroom, 2-bath home with approximately 2,045 square feet at $279,500, and a 3-bedroom, 3-bath home with approximately 2,196 square feet at $289,900.

Of course, inventory changes constantly, and not every $300,000 property will include acreage or a large yard. But New Boston and the surrounding rural areas give buyers opportunities that may be harder to duplicate inside a larger city.

Around $300,000 in New Boston, buyers may find:

  • 3 or 4-bedroom homes
  • Approximately 1,900 to 2,400+ square feet in many cases
  • Larger yards or more separation between neighboring homes
  • Properties outside city limits
  • Homes along county roads or Farm-to-Market roads
  • Workshops, storage buildings, or additional outdoor space on some properties
  • Updated older homes as well as newer construction
  • Occasional acreage opportunities

New Boston's smaller inventory is important to understand, though. Realtor.com currently shows significantly fewer homes for sale in New Boston than in Texarkana, so buyers looking for a very specific combination of price, age, acreage, and features may need to be patient.

What $300,000 Looks Like in Texarkana, Texas

Drive east into Texarkana, and the same $300,000 budget starts to look a little different.

Texarkana gives buyers a much larger selection of homes and neighborhoods. Instead of the rural or semi-rural options commonly found around New Boston, many properties at this price point are located in established residential areas with convenient access to shopping, restaurants, healthcare, major highways, and other city amenities.

Current inventory shows several examples around the $300,000 mark. Listings have included a 3-bedroom, 2-bath home with approximately 1,966 square feet at $300,000, a 3-bedroom, 2-bath home with approximately 2,219 square feet at $299,000, and a 4-bedroom, 3-bath home with approximately 2,056 square feet at $273,000.

So, contrary to the assumption that moving outside Texarkana automatically gets you a dramatically larger house, the square-footage numbers can sometimes be surprisingly similar.

The biggest difference may be the property around the house and the overall setting.

Around $300,000 in Texarkana, buyers may find:

  • 3 or 4-bedroom homes
  • Established residential neighborhoods
  • Brick traditional-style homes
  • Updated kitchens and interiors
  • Approximately 1,700 to 2,200+ square feet in many cases
  • Attached garages
  • Fenced backyards
  • More choices within a relatively small geographic area
  • Easier access to major retail, dining, medical facilities, and Interstate 30

Texarkana's larger housing stock can also give buyers more choices when comparing different home styles, ages, layouts, and locations.

$300K vs. $300K: Where Does the Difference Show Up?

The comparison becomes more interesting when you stop looking only at bedrooms and square footage.

Lot Size and Outdoor Space

This is one area where New Boston and the surrounding area can have an advantage.

Once you move outside the more densely developed parts of town, it becomes more common to encounter larger lots, county-road properties, shops, storage buildings, or additional land.

In Texarkana, $300,000 can still buy an impressive property, but buyers shopping established neighborhoods will often be trading some of that land for proximity and convenience.

Location and Convenience

Texarkana offers the advantages that come with being the larger commercial center of the region.

For a buyer who regularly visits major retailers, restaurants, medical providers, or employers in Texarkana, living within the city may reduce the amount of driving required throughout the week.

New Boston buyers may accept a longer drive to some of those destinations in exchange for the smaller-town or more rural setting they prefer.

Neither choice is automatically better. They simply appeal to different priorities.

More Inventory in Texarkana, More Rural Possibilities Around New Boston

Another important distinction is the number of available homes.

Realtor.com currently shows hundreds of properties for sale in Texarkana compared with a much smaller inventory in New Boston.

That can make Texarkana especially attractive to buyers who want several homes to compare before making a decision.

In New Boston, finding the right property can sometimes require watching the market more closely. This is especially true if the wish list includes something very specific, such as:

3+ bedrooms + updated interior + workshop + acreage + under $300,000.

Those properties certainly exist, but there may only be a few available at any given time.

Don't Compare Homes Based on Price Alone

Two houses listed for $300,000 can represent completely different values.

Before deciding which one is the better purchase, I recommend looking at:

  • Lot size
  • Actual heated and cooled square footage
  • Age of the home
  • Roof and HVAC age
  • Renovations and updates
  • Garage, carport, shop, and storage space
  • City versus rural utilities
  • Property taxes
  • Location
  • Comparable recent sales
  • Future maintenance needs

A 2,000-square-foot home on a smaller lot in Texarkana and a 2,000-square-foot home outside New Boston may have the same asking price while offering two completely different ownership experiences.

That's why I encourage buyers to compare value, not simply price per square foot.

So, Should You Buy in New Boston or Texarkana?

If your budget is around $300,000, I wouldn't automatically eliminate either market.

New Boston may make sense if your priorities lean toward:

More outdoor space, larger lots, rural properties, workshops, fewer neighboring homes, or a smaller-community setting.

Texarkana may make sense if your priorities lean toward:

A larger selection of homes, established residential neighborhoods, and convenient access to shopping, dining, medical services, employment, and other city amenities.

And there is a third option many buyers overlook: search both.

New Boston and Texarkana are close enough that buyers can realistically consider properties in both areas. Expanding the search can uncover a property that wasn't originally on your radar but ultimately fits your needs better.
